Being addicted to smartphones can make you feel dumb sometimes (11/01/16, Madison College)

Every year, there’s always a new smartphone game craze. Several years ago, it was Temple Run. Soon after that it was Candy Crush. This year it was Pokémon GO. Flappy Bird & Minecraft have also found themselves amongst the addictive games.

I’ve had my fair share of game addictions. Usually I’ll play a game for a few weeks then completely bail on it and forget it ever existed. Sometimes I’ll keep a game on my phone and go back to it every once in a while. I’ll find myself trying to do homework but then I get a notification on my iPhone about a game that I’ve downloaded and I can’t help but play it and get even farther in the game.

Don’t get me wrong. I love playing games on my iPhone as much as the next person. But is too much, too much? People are playing these apps while driving. While in class. It’s distracting. People are losing their focus. It’s dangerous. People are focusing too much on their phones. It’s not just texting anymore. It’s playing games that they are literally addicted to. They would play it non-stop.

People are too addicted to their phones when it comes to playing games. It gives them something to do when they’re bored or they don’t want to do homework. Especially when they’re able to play with their friends because it still has that social aspect. I’m addicted to my phone. I’ll admit that. I’m addicted to games on my phone. But when it gets to the point of driving while on your phone, it’s insane. That’s when people need to tell themselves to stop and put the phone down.
